Are Window AC Units Worth It?

The summer heat and humidity make air conditioning a must-have in Massachusetts. The question is, what makes the most sense for your home?

Window Units vs. Central A/C

There are definite pros and cons to window units as well as central air conditioners.

Window units are less expensive, typically easy to install and operate and are effective at cooling one to two rooms.

While they are getting better at filtering the air, however, they do not compare to central air conditioners. For those who suffer from allergies or asthma central A/C is superior. Window units also do not circulate the air as efficiently as central A/C so you will tend to have inconsistent temperatures throughout one room. They are also noisier and reduce the natural light in a home’s interior.

Central air conditioning cools the entire home, has higher efficiency and superior filtration to window units. They are definitely more expensive to install or repair but if you have a larger home with more space to cool, window units will also get expensive. Overall, central A/C’s easy automation and consistent room temperatures make it a very desirable option for most homeowners.

What about Ductless Systems?

If you live in an apartment, condominium or larger home that uses a “non-ducted” system (i.e: hot-water heat, space heaters or radiant panels) central A/C may not be an option.

Ductless heating and air conditioning systems cool multiple rooms, are quiet and highly energy-efficient. The flexibility of ductless "mini-split" systems allows for easy installation in such areas as additions, sunrooms, finished attics and garages or they can also be used to heat your entire home. There are options for unit installations as well. They can hang from walls or be suspended from ceilings, all while being managed with a remote-control device.

They do cost more than window-units, and also need a trained technician to install but many people find the benefits of precise comfort, long-term energy savings and quiet running volume make them worth the investment.

It is our recommendation for homeowners to take advantage of the excellent features available through central cooling or ductless mini-split systems.
