Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

Cold air blowing from your furnace is an unpleasant experience for any home or business owner. Massachusetts residents typically rely on their furnaces throughout the cold winters and into the spring so we know how frustrating and uncomfortable it is not to have heat. The quickest way to solve this problem is to contact us and have one of our trained and experienced technicians assess the cause. However, sometimes it can be a simple fix.

Here are a few things to try before you call:

  1. Change your air filter and clean the surrounding area.

Restricted airflow can cause your unit to overheat, which results in heat no longer being distributed throughout your home. If you're unsure of how to change your filter, we can send a technician to change your air filter.

  2. Have an oil furnace? Check your oil levels.

If your oil supply is running low, your furnace might not be getting the fuel it needs.

  3. Check your thermostat.

Is it set to “on”? If so, switch it to auto. When your thermostat runs all day long, it is only blowing hot air when the furnace is running. This means that cold air will blow throughout your home whenever your furnace kicks off.

If none of these options resolves the issue, then it's time to call us so we can provide a professional diagnosis. While it could be a number of concerns, some of the most frequent issues we find are:

1. Damaged or faulty pilot light

This is a relatively easy repair, and your system will be up and running shortly.

2. Dirty flame detector

With the right tools, sanitizing this detector should have your heat up and running again in little time.

3. Air blockage in the ventilation system

Over time ductwork can build up with debris. This can sometimes be remedied quickly but may also require a professional cleaning.

4. Ductwork damage

Check for leaks or cracks in your ductwork. It is important to repair or replace damaged ductwork to keep your system working efficiently and effectively. This also keeps your energy bills down.

5. Oil supply line

If your system is not getting enough fuel, it will not run properly.

Many furnace repairs can be prevented with regularly-scheduled annual maintenance. These tune-ups help us catch potential issues before they turn into unexpected system failures. Schedule your appointment with our trusted team of experts if you’re near the Wakefield, MA area!
